The partnership was initially established in 1967 between David de Caires and Miles Fitzpatrick, who started the firm on the basis that they would focus mainly on Civil matters. The firm soon attracted its first substantial clients, Royal Bank of Canada, Esso Guyana Limited and John Fernandes Limited (a local shipping Company). At present, the firm also provides services to Demerara Distillers Limited, Guyana Publications Limited, Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company Limited, Guyana Power & Light Company. In the late 1980’s, David de Caires founded Stabroek News as a weekly (Sunday) Newspaper. The paper rapidly developed into the leading daily newspaper and de Caires retired from the practice in 1992 to manage the newspapers full time. During that period, Leon Oswald Rockcliffe joined the firm as a Consultant in non contentious matters. In 1991 Baynay Ram Karran joined the firm as a partner. A few years following the 1992 General Elections, Ram Karran was appointed Guyana’s Ambassador to the United States of America and retired from active practice. Melinda Janki joined the firm in 1994. She was previously employed by Lovell’s International LLP in London as a Solicitor and at British Petroleum where she worked on international financing and down stream matters. She currently serves with the firm as a Consultant. Timothy Jonas joined the firm in 1998. He was previously employed as State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General of Guyana where he undertook litigation and legal advice on behalf of the Government of Guyana. He is now a partner of the firm. The firm presently consists of Miles Fitzpatrick SC and Timothy Jonas, and Associate Attorneys-at-Law Gino Persaud and Dennis Paul. The expertise of consultants Leon Rockcliffe and Melinda Janki in Guyana and Dr. Claude Denbow in Trinidad and Tobago is available to the firm upon request.
